Values drive strategy
FREYR’s values drive Speed, Scale and Sustainability – the cornerstones of our strategy for delivering battery solutions to decarbonise the transport and energy sectors. These sectors account for around 70% of global carbon emissions, so their decarbonisation is crucial if we are to realise the ambition of keeping global warming to below 1.5oC.
Our values frame the decisions we make and how we behave, both towards each other and our stakeholders (customers, suppliers, technology partners, investors and communities). They define who we are, what we want to become and what makes Freyr unique.
Empowerment
Everything starts with EMPOWERMENT. This means opening up for employees to take more control over their targets and work than is normally the case. It also means asking employees to solve problems rather than only follow a process. Processes, standards, compliance and discipline are all essential, but we make every effort to go beyond. The feeling that it is OK to speak up and to take initiative comes from being part of an inclusive environment that fosters trust.
Collaboration
Such an inclusive environment is also the basis for our second value, COLLABORATION. We think that helping colleagues to succeed is just as important as you excelling in your own role – we only succeed as a team. In practice this means good communication and information flow, sharing knowledge and lessons learned, and effectively using the collaboration tools we have at our disposal.
Both EMPOWERMENT and COLLABORATION are created through leadership based on purpose, where we aim to help each individual find new ways to achieve targets they themselves define, set within the overall direction of the company. This purpose is summarised in our vision: to accelerate the decarbonization of all transport and energy systems. Everyone in FREYR is up for that vision.
EMPOWERMENT and COLLABORATION combine to act as the two sides of a wheel, spinning faster and faster to create Speed. FREYR needs to move at great Speed if we are to make our contribution to decarbonization quickly enough. Speed will also help us survive and thrive as a business. In an extremely dynamic industrial sector, we need to tackle more problems, more quickly than usual.
The second cornerstone of our strategy is Scale. The energy transition requires enormous volumes of batteries; only giga-scale production will do.
Innovation
Our third value, INNOVATION, turns Speed into Scale. We define INNOVATION as a combination of big leaps and incremental steps. We achieve both by thinking big and acting small. This helps us develop and scale reliable solutions. Acting small means building insight, standardizing and improving one step at a time, based on detail focus, data and discipline. It also means we experiment, failing fast, embedding learning and greater insights into the next iteration. Thinking big grows from EMPOWERMENT and challenging norms. Someone has to do things bigger and faster than normal – why not us?
INNOVATION is also finding the right balance between structure and flexibility. Structure includes the standardised procedures that allow us to deliver on customer expectations consistently, in a safe and secure environment. Flexibility allows us to respond quickly and effectively to changes in our environment, and to harness our creativity to solve problems and develop new solutions to emerging challenges.
If we can harness Speed to develop battery solutions at Scale, we fulfil our ultimate goal of Sustainability in having a major impact on reducing carbon emissions. To be able to do all that we need to behave in a particular way, summarised in our fourth and last value, RESPECT.
Respect
For us, RESPECT starts with yourself, believing in your individual potential and your ability to create value. At FREYR, we fundamentally believe that people are amazing - each and every employee creates magic each and every day, from the ideas we bring to the table and the problems we solve, to the relationships we build. We believe in your ability to make magic – and hope you do too (if not, you soon will).
RESPECT means being curious about, and appreciating the value of, different opinions, beliefs, and perspectives. It means being honest, providing constructive feedback to bring the best out in others. It also means respecting decisions and following corporate policies and guidelines.
RESPECT extends beyond how we relate to ourselves and each other as colleagues to how we relate to all our stakeholders, across the value chain, from our suppliers, strategic partners and investors to our customers. All in the frame of how we impact the physical environment. We RESPECT nature in seeing ourselves as a part of it, making our contribution to carbon abatement whilst minimising our impact on the physical world around us.
For us, RESPECT also means putting Safety First. Having respect for our safety and that of our colleagues, having respect for the dangers and hazards that are inevitable in our industry, and respect for the procedures and processes that have been developed to maintain a safe and secure working environment. This means we have to think ahead, plan and review activities, be observant, report, raise issues and proactively work towards reaching our goal of zero accidents.
