Sustainability goals per part of value chain
We break down how we influence the world into 7 areas and set sustainability targets for each area. Our targets all contribute directly to the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and have the same timeline, to 2030.
You can see our targets explained on the right.
Our Markets and customers
Each time one of our batteries is put into the energy system, perhaps on a wind or solar farm, it will reduce the use of fossil-fuel based power. Over the lifetime of those batteries, that will amount to an enormous reduction of CO2 emissions.
Using a car analogy, with achievement of all our year 2030 volume ambitions, the batteries the company produces each year will reduce CO2 emissions equal to all the petrol-fuelled cars registered in the EU today!
Our Cell production
In our cell production we will have near-zero CO2 emissions through the use of renewable energy. This is a promise.
Stop a moment to consider that statement
near-zero CO2 emissions
It is breathtakingly challenging to fulfill in practice. But we are committed to getting as close as humanly possible.
Our Supply chain
FREYR has an ambition for 2030 of 15 kg CO2 emissions per kWh battery capacity produced. This includes the mining of our minerals, processing of the same minerals into precursor and active material, as well as our own battery cell manufacturing. This is substantially lower than global average today of 80-100 kg CO2 per kWh, from the various types of Lithium-Ion battery chemistries and manufacturing technologies.
The graph above shows where the emissions occur in our value chain today and how we will reduce them over time.
Our suppliers are central to achieving our ambition of a 15 kg CO2 footprint, in addition to continuously improving social performance, including securing human rights and contributing to global goals on deforestation and biodiversity.
Our Product
Our semi-solid battery cells are produced using 24M technology. Compared to conventional lithium batteries the 24M manufacturing process doesn’t use a chemical binder and produces the batteries in fewer steps with thicker layers. This leads to us using less energy, less land (and therefore lower impact on biodiversity), and less dangerous chemicals. In addition, our batteries are easier to recycle than conventionally produced batteries.
Our Communities
We drive development and jobs in our communities and work together with local leaders to reap the benefits of establishing ourselves as a major employer as well as managing the challenges. Our ambition is to receive 75% positive feedback from our community stakeholders. Our experiences in the small municipality of Mo i Rana on the Arctic Circle of Norway are examples for us to follow elsewhere in the world.
Our Factories
We are designing and building highly digital and efficient giga factories that will align with the EU taxonomy standards for green environmentally sustainable buildings. This means they will be seen as a ‘green’ investment for the financial markets, with a potential for lower costs of capital.
Our Employees
We believe we are able to unleash new energy from the competent and ambitious employees we are recruiting from around the world. We also aim to build the most interesting industrial workplace possible with them. We can promise that a job with FREYR is both exciting and challenging.
We also have an ambition to maintain a good work-life balance. These 2 objectives don't always match up. We work hard to ensure that the level of excitement and challenge doesn't go too far for any particular individual by, amongst other things:
- Using Empowerment, our prime value, to give people more tools to manage their own lives. They are expected and helped to take responsibility for their work and themselves.
- Our HR-network across the business keeps an eye on colleagues that are taking on too much, ensuring that they re-establish a better balance.
