We are looking for a Lead / Principal Engineer - Cell Engineering to lead the technical development of lithium-ion battery cells from idea generation to series production according to FREYR’s New Product Development and Introduction process.
FREYR Battery is on a mission to decarbonize energy and transportation systems globally by producing the world’s most sustainable battery cells. Over 50% of all carbon mitigation is dependent on batteries. The industry is experiencing exponential growth.
FREYR is well set to succeed in this extremely exciting sector. We opened our first commercial-scale battery cell factory in Mo i Rana, Norway at the end of March. We will use this plant to prove both 24M’s semi-solid technology and our various products. This technology represents a breakthrough in the industry providing new Unique Selling Points, and much-reduced cost, CO2 footprint, capex, and factory size.
We will then build gigafactories based on 24M’s technology in Mo i Rana and in Georgia USA before expanding our technology base with other partners.

In the Lead / Principal Engineer - Cell Engineering role, you will own the cell design and the technical readiness level (TRL) responsibility for one product, ensuring sales/customer’s requirements for the product are met.
This position reports to Head of Cell Engineering, and is to be based in Boston, US.
Main tasks include
- Technical Project Management of a cross functional team to ensure successful launch of FREYR's first product in Giga America
- Responsible for product technology and change documentation through PLM and enterprise quality management processes
- Owning the cell design and the responsibility of the technical readiness level (TRL) for one product, ensuring sales/customer’s requirements for the product are met
- Leading the technical risk assessment and mitigation activities (DFMEA)
- Coordinating the development work packages of FREYR’s technology partners and in-house R&D
- Supporting future and early-phase cell technology R&D
- On-site troubleshooting in the industrialization phase
- Responsible role in failure root cause analysis and product improvement and verification processes
Qualifications – Required
- Minimum M.Sc. in Electrochemistry or other relevant discipline
- Minimum of 3 years of experience with lithium-ion cell design/development in an industrial context
- Experience from battery production in scale
- Fluent in spoken and written English
- Experience with program/team / project management
Qualifications - Advantageous
- Experience and good understanding of design tools such as DFMEA, DOE, FTA etc.
- Hands-on experience in cell building, testing and analysis (lab-scale or industry-scale)
- Hands-on experience in battery material characterization (physical, chemical, electrochemical and mechanical)
- Experience with working in quality processes and systems (8D, Six Sigma, etc.)
